Jackanory Pre School

Jackanory Pre School

A little about us

Jackanory was started in 1971 by a group of Mothers who wanted to prepare their young children for school through enhancing their development both educationally and socially in a community group. Over 40 years later, Jackanory is still run by a committee of parents who are responsible for ensuring that the qualified staff complies with the pre-schools aims to its full potential.

Jackanory is a non-profit making, registered charity affiliated to the Pre-School Learning Alliance.  Throughout the year, fundraising activities such as the Christmas Fair and Chobham Carnival raise money which is used to buy more equipment for the children.

Oak Room

This stimulating room is for children aged between 2 and a half and 5 years. Working within the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum we gradually prepare the children for their next big adventure – school!

Catering for up to 28 children it is excellently equipped with toys, arts and crafts, books, supervised climbing apparatus, dressing up, imaginative play, and of course the large garden (which we encourage the children to play in every session weather permitting) with ride on toys, sand pit, and other outdoors equipment the children have fun from the minute they walk through the door.

Acorn Room

This delightful room is for children aged between 2-3 years. It is smaller than the Oak Room and there is a maximum of 8 children per session, ensuring they get all the attention they require. It’s fully equipped with an excellent choice of toys, art and crafts and books for the children helping them to develop, create and explore.

It also has its own garden which we encourage the children to play in every session (weather permitting!) with fun outdoors equipment and big flower pots where the children can grow things.

I love to work with young children because everything makes an impression on them, it is so rewarding to see their curiosity turn to understanding and pride in their achievements and to be a part of this learning

Watching the children increase their independence and make friends with each other is lovely to watch.  Especially when they share and play so nicely together.

I really enjoy sitting in the book corner reading to the children. Before I know it, I am surrounded by eager little faces all wanting to listen.

Watching the children's faces as they realise what they are capable of is priceless.

I love helping the children to create a piece of art to take home to show their family.  They are always so proud of their efforts.

Jo, Pre-School Assistant
Children's imaginations know no bounds. When they are dressing up or role playing it is magical to see where their minds take them.
